I started out riding like an average kid, using my bike as a tool to explore my surroundings and gain freedom. I always really enjoyed it, but I had no idea what mountain biking was really about until my uncle, Charlie, introduced me to the joys of riding a proper mountain bike on real trails. It was then that I realized that growing up in Missoula, MT was a mountain biker’s dream; with countless miles of pristine trails accessible right from the door. Once I was hooked on riding it was not long before I started dabbling in the racing scene. I did my first mountain bike race when I was 13 and I was hooked from then on. My brother got into racing at about the same time and my parents were extremely supportive, driving Andy and I all over the place for races. After a couple years of doing local races I slowly started keying in on the National Series races and managed to make the World Championship team during my last year as a junior. I lucked out big time and landed a spot on USA Cycling’s U23 National Team for the next 3 seasons. It was a dream-come-true scenario and a perfect stepping stone into the professional ranks. I signed with the Subaru-Gary Fisher team in 2007 and have been riding for them since.
Now, I home base out of Missoula, MT for the bulk of the year and migrate down to Tucson, AZ during the winter. For the last few years I have been competing in the U.S. National mountain bike series as well as the World Cup series and that adds up to a lot of flight miles and more days on the road than at home. I have gained many amazing experiences during my travels around the world and sometimes I still can’t believe that I ride my bike for a job.
